This three legged vessel is an ancient Chinese cauldron form called a Ding. Dings were used as important ritual objects to make offerings and as symbol of authority. They were used throughout the Shang (c. 1600 - c. 1046 BC) and Zhou dynasties (c. 1046-256 BC).
