A brush rack used for holding the brushes. The center of the brush rack displays a design of a bat hanging upside down. Since the Chinese pronunciation of the character 蝠 (Fú) that stands for ‘bat’ is quite similar to that of character 福 (Fú) meaning ‘good fortune’ bat came to stand for good luck, too. The manner of using one character to remind the reader of another character that is different in meaning but identical or similar in pronunciation is called Xiéyīn (諧音, homophone) in Chinese.
