In the 1950s, Art Clokey decided to make a three-minute film based on Disney’s “Fantasia.” Clokey molded clay to make the pieces look like they were in motion and dubbed his film “Gumbasia.” Soon producer Sam Engel encouraged Clokey to create clay characters and stories for children. Clokey next produced a stop-motion character Gumby, a slender green clay figure with a slanted head. “The Gumby Show” debuted in 1957. For years, children and adults tuned in to watch Gumby and his adventures with Pokey, Pickle, the Blockheads, and Boo. Gumby was no longer in production by the late 1960s. Gumby returned to the air as a national syndication in the 1980s and quickly regained popularity. He remains an icon today.
