Two of the most important regions in the early development of the Buddha image were Mathura in central India and Gandhara far to the northwest, in today’s Pakistan. This image and the one next to it are both from Mathura. Images from Gandhara can be seen nearby. Mathura artisans used red sandstone that often had cream-colored spots. Gandharan artists used a finegrained gray stone.
