This finest bronze from the famous site of Phophnar of Gupta- Vakataka period was discovered in 1964, in the village of Phophnar near Burhampur in Madhya Pradesh. It presents the Buddha standing with gentle sway on the calyx of a lotus flower though lotus is missing, which is mounted on a rectangular pedestal, carved with floral pattern. His right hand displays the abhaya mudra the protection posture, while his left hand holds the hem of his outer garment (sanghati) covering both the shoulders. This is a traditional posture of the Buddha images where he offers the protection to his devotees. The figure is very soft in modelling and is characterized by the oval benign face, half closed eyes, elongated ears, curly hair and long flowing drapery, the typical features of Gupta art.
