Early Buddha images from China echoed, with variations, the style and features of Buddha images from ancient Gandhara in today's Pakistan and ancient Mathura in today's India. Lions at the base of the throne were common in early Buddhist art in various regions, and symbolized the lion-like strength and majesty of the Buddha's teaching.
