Burgonet

Around 1570

Museo Poldi Pezzoli

Museo Poldi Pezzoli
Milano, Italy

This burgonet (a helmet with a bill or peak, neck guard and hinged cheek-pieces, leaving the face uncovered) is embossed, engraved, tooled, impressed, gilt and silvered. At the sides it bears the figures of Victory with the palm leaf and Fame with the trumpet. Both are dressed in antique style and accompanied by a boy. On the front is a head of Medusa, with a jewel in her hair and two snakes entwined around it. The burgonet, of outstanding quality, is one of the few pieces from the second half of the sixteenth century still decorated mythological subjects.
