Cabezón 2 is a work by the Dutch artist Raymond Lemstra (Groningen, Netherlands, 1978). Lemstra used to produce very elaborate pencil drawings, but he made the leap to larger paintings and in colour with the support of SOLO. In his work he focuses on fictional portraits built from geometric shapes. His fascination with simplified facial features arose from his appreciation of the selective emphasis of children’s drawings and pre-colonial masks. Human beings are predisposed to recognise faces and the artist plays with this human impulse to recognise life. It points out how self-centred we are as a species, but it also reveals a beautiful imagination, inherent to us all, that seeks to connect us with our environment.
