Chalice( known as Calice of Ludovico Sforza)

Anonymous Italian, Murano workshopEnd of the 15th century, beginning of  the 16th century (within 1535)

Sforzesco Castle

Sforzesco Castle
Milan, Italy

This chalice made in a Murano
workshop was probably part of a set belonging to the Sforza family. The chalice
of Murano crystal is known as the “Sforza Chalice”. It bears on both sides the
Sforza heraldic emblems, done in enamel. The
coat-of-arms and richness of decoration suggest that this piece may have been
used at banquets held for special occasions, official dinners, or as a gift to
other noble houses, dating its manufacture to before 1535 when the last member
of the dynasty, Francesco II, died.
