On 1 July 1945, the united trade union of workers, employees and officials was formed in St. Ingbert. This trade union was the umbrella organisation for a total of 14 individual unions in the Saarland. Within just a short amount of time, more than 100,000 workers joined. 1 May 1946 witnessed the first free May demonstrations since the end of the Second World War.
