Johanna was given the brooch by her husband on Christmas Eve 1859. As with so many of the garnitures contained in the Hallwyl collection, this piece was made by the Gustaf Möllenborg jewellers in Stockholm.

The gold rim around the edge of the cameo is adorned with a round moulding and four worked leaves. The cameo itself was most likely made in Italy, and depicts a woman and child with a donkey in an idyllic rural scene.

In a full-length portrait from the 1860s, Johanna is wearing the brooch with a chequered dress.
