Canopy Bed with Lattice Railings

The Palace Museum

The Palace Museum
Beijing, China

The bed has a roof that is supported by six posts rising from the corners and front edge of the bed. The lattice panels hung from the roof edges are carved with floral designs in openwork. Enclosing the bed on three sides and part of the facade, the railing is made up of short pieces joined together to form the auspicious linked pattern (a form of wan in Chinese and svastika from the original Sanskrit). Crossbars above the railings connect the neighboring posts to enhance the structure.
Under the woven bamboo bed surface are arch-shaped aprons. The horse-hoof feet of the cabriole legs are designed in the shape of scrolling clouds.
The canopy bed was widely used in the humid, hot South. It was draped with gauze curtains in the summer to ward off mosquitoes and cotton cloth in winter to keep in warmth.
