The “four winds cap” is part of the traditional men’s costume amongst the Finnish Sámi people. The way it is sewn leads to four tails at the top.The resulting gusset and broad rim of the cap are trimmed with red cloth and coloured braids. The cap’s edge is additionally trimmed with a strip of fur. Six dangling strips of cloth in red, yellow and green are attached at the back. The Sámi people, who mainly draw their identity from their livelihood as reindeer farmers, live in northern Scandinavia and on the Russian Kola Peninsula.
