Museo Sefardí
Toledo, Spain

Capital with bilingual inscription (Hebrew, Arabic) carved in limestone. The Hebrew inscription appears on a single line which runs round the whole of the base of the capital, and the Arabic inscription is shown in calligraphic characters. Both inscriptions are richly decorated. It was found in the rubble of San Juan de los Reyes in Toledo. The content of the Hebrew inscription, in the form of a greeting and farewell, suggests the earlier existence of the synagogue. It is thought to have belonged to one of the 10 synagogues in Toledo mentioned by Albeneh in his poem written around 1391, most of which were destroyed in the uprising of that same year. If this is the case it would have been placed near the entrance of the synagogue.
