Guatemala, Guatemala

This large wool tunic woven in a backstrap loom is known as capixay, a word likely derived from the Basque capusayo or kapusay. It’s worn by the men living in San Juan Atitan, Huehuetenango, and the Mam men and women from this town work together in the making of this garment. The capixay has two fake, narrow sleeves that aren’t meant to be used but are thrown back over the shoulders or simply left hanging on the sides, as is shown in the picture. It is a garment of European origin.
