G.M. Whipple published the first version of the Authors card game in 1861. Later in the 19th century, Parker Brother published the game. Authors found such popularity that nearly all of the other game manufacturers eventually published a version during the 19th and throughout most of the 20th centuries. A maker of inexpensive paper toys in Racine, Wisconsin, Whitman Publishing produced this version during the early 20th century.
