A late 19th century version of today's Bingo, McLoughlin Brothers' Lotto is a game for children. Lotto games, popular in Europe throughout the 19th century, came to America as children's games at first. They were used not only as number counting games, but also for teaching spelling and recognizing animals, etc. When the game "Beano" showed up at county fairs in the 1920s in America, which led to the introduction of Bingo as we know it today, it was no doubt based on these late 19th century Lotto games.
