Carlist Soldier Playing the Bugle / Civil War Poster, 56

This poster portrays a requeté (a term used for the supporters of Carlism during the First Carlist War and then, by extension, applied to the Navarrese population fighting on the Nationalist side during the Civil War) wearing a red beret, which had been the sign of the Traditionalists, and with a background in reddish tones that suggest a new dawn, in allusion to the rebirth of Spain. The metaphor of the dawn as the bearer of a new era would become a recurring motif in pro-Franco propagandistic iconography.

It has been written that this iconography rejects the forms that arose during the 20th century, returning instead to traditionalist models with details borrowed from Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. The posters of the "new" State will be impregnated with language, both iconographic and contextual, that is purely rhetorical, with hardly any integration in the history of fascist poster design.
