The trade association of "Christian Miners in the Saar Region" was founded in 1894 and was an officially non-denominational association, though it was,= in reality highly influenced by Catholicism. It competed with the Diözesanverband Katholischer Arbeitervereine (literally: "Diocesan Association of Catholic Workers Fellowships") founded on the request of Bishop Korum of Trier.
