During the time of the Saarland Protectorate, two different types of ID cards were issued. A red ID card "A" that was issued to those born in the Saarland and a grey ID card "B", which was received by residents that had moved there. These were commonly referred to as "Graupässler" (literally: "people with grey passports"). Their ID cards merely served as residence permits.
