Unearthed in the Five-dynasty Tomb of State Yangwu in Caizhuang village, Hanjiang district of Yangzhou city in 1975, this wood sculpture, though only simple blade-work, is accurate in modeling and vivid in illustration, serving as a testimony to the ingenious modeling and caving techniques of the craftsman as well as an important physical evidence to the study on women’s hairstyles of the Five Dynasties period (907-960 AD). With both temples covered with hair and head featuring a high chignon adorned with two openwork leave-shaped hairpins, this maid wears a long robe with broad sleeves, her hands crossed resting in front of chest. Traces of ink lines and coloring can still be seen on the garment, which was illustrate with simple but expressive blade-work, while the face was portrayed with deep and impressive lines.
