A ''vara'' was a unit of length used in Spain in the 18th century, after the Royal Decree of June 14, 1750 established it as an obligatory measurement, equivalent to 3 feet. Given that the length of a foot (the standard used in archaic measurement systems) varied, the length of a "vara" differed across Spain's territories from 0.8380 meters in Mexico to 0.7704 meters in Aragon. However, the most commonly used measurement was the "Castilian vara" (or "Burgos vara"), measuring approximately 83.5 centimeters.
It was the unit of measurement used in shipyards during the 18th and 19th centuries, together with its multiples and submultiples: Burgos feet, ''palmos'' (palms), ''dedos'' (fingers), ''líneas'' (lines), etc.
