Celadon-Glazed Ceramic Figurine of a Dog in a Pen

The Palace Museum

The Palace Museum
Beijing, China

The vividly depicted dog rests in the center of a shallow and slightly concave pen. The solid clay core of the fired pottery was coated with the greyish-green celadon glaze. Potted works dating from the Jin dynasty (265–420) are abundant and boast great variety. Mostly kneaded into shape by hand, these works serve as a testament to the level of artisanal skills of the period.
