Set between two cottages of the Railway Village, the Central Community Centre was built in 1862 as an armoury and drill hall for local volunteers. In 1871-2 it was converted into an accident hospital for the Medical Fund Society, to which employees workers at the nearby Great Western Railway Works subscribed. It remained in use as a hospital until 1960, becoming a community centre in the 1970s.
