Ceramic ceremonial vessel or urpu used as a container for chicha or corn beer ML040400

This is a big jar or Urpu to contain the chicha or corn beer, ceremonial drink obtained from the fermented corn, shared in Andean festivities. It has a long neck and flat side handles. Presents a small stylized puma's head, applied in the place where the neck meets the chamber of the large container. This application is practically an imperial seal. The surfaces of these large jars are decorated with different motifs. Necks are decorated with horizontal bands, rhombuses or triangles, and the body presents vertical stripes with various patterns. The front and the back of the jar are decorated in different ways. Some of the most common designs are concentric rhombuses, and horizontal stripes with geometric patterns such as triangles and rhombuses. There are also depictions of cornstalks. The bottom of the urpus, have a base tip, that served to ground the container and to help pour the beverage in smaller containers from which it would then be served to the keros, the tall vases that were used to drink the chicha in the ceremonies. Este es un cántaro o urpu para contener la chicha o cerveza de maíz, bebida ceremonial producto del fermento del maíz, compartida durante las festividades andinas. Tiene cuello largo y asas laterales de forma plana y presentan una pequeña cabeza de puma estilizada, aplicada a la parte frontal del cántaro, en la zona en que el cuello se une al gran recipiente. Esta aplicación es prácticamente un sello imperial. La superficie de estos grandes cántaros está decorada con diferentes motivos. En los cuellos hay bandas horizontales con motivos geométricos, rombos o triángulos, y en el cuerpo hay bandas verticales con diversos motivos, siendo diferente lo que se representa en la parte delantera y posterior del cántaro. Algunos de los diseños más frecuentes son los rombos o figuras romboidales concéntricas, y las bandas horizontales con motivos geométricos como triángulos y rombos. También hay representaciones de espigas de maíz. Si observamos la parte inferior de los urpus, veremos la forma en punta de la base. Esta forma servía para que, cuando el recipiente estuviese apoyado en tierra, se pudiera inclinar manteniendo la estabilidad. De esa manera se podría verter la chicha en recipientes menores, desde los cuales sería luego escanciada en los keros, los vasos altos que eran usados para brindar en las ceremonias. (UH)
