This sculptural ceramic jar portrays in its upper body incised and painted stepped motifs and volutes. The stepped motif with volute is probably the most frequently represented motif in pre-Columbian art, in many styles and periods. It is a motif referred to the connection between the worlds (upper, earthy, inner) and the dynamic between them. It is also associated with the symbolism of the mountain and the water running down the coast from the highlands. Color has been applied post-fire in the area demarcated by the incisions. (UH)

(UH)
