Ceramic Whorl

Modeled spindle whorl with a generally spherical shape that is flattened at the poles. Surficial color ranges from medium to reddish brown. Around the whorl's circumference are nineteen unevenly spaced grooves oriented parallel to the axis of the whorl. There are some chips along the circumference as well as chipping and wear along the margins of the central perforation. This specimen has paste with characteristics of Salt Plain. This spindle whorl was recovered from a freestanding room in a habitation area 5 of the Pueblo Grande site. Pueblo Grande was a large village site located at the headgates of a major canal system occupied as early as AD 500, through 1450. Museum Accession: 1996.17
