Ceremonial Corte (wrap around skirt)

This skirt or corte was woven on a foot loom using mercerized cotton and natural brown cotton or cuyuscate. It features warp and weft stripe designs with geometric figures made using the ikat technique. This is the only skirt in the museum’s main collection made with cuyuscate.The skirt, commonly known as corte, and called uq in Mayan Kaqchikel language, is an important garment in the Mayan feminine attire. It is a rectangular or tubular piece of variable width and length that is wrapped around the waist and is held up with a sash or faja. In Guatemala, it is currently worn in different ways depending on the region. The skirt exhibited here has features that are similar to those of pre-Hispanic cortes, such as the shape and how it is worn.
