Ceremonial vessel that represents pelicans ML100409

This is a bowl made of two sheets of silver alloy, one internal and one external. The outer surface of the bowl is decorated with embossed birds, probably pelicans. Birds like these are very common motifs in the friezes of the adobe city of Chan Chan, capital of the Chimu Empire. Seabirds are very important in the world view of pre-Columbian cultures, because they inhabit the coast and the guano islands offshore, therefore being animals that communicate the lando with the sea. These animals are symbols of the intermediation between both worlds. (UH)

Este es un cuenco formado por dos láminas de aleación de plata, una interior y otra exterior. La superficie exterior del cuenco está decorada con aves repujadas. Probablemente se trata de pelícanos. Aves como éstas son motivos muy frecuentes en los frisos de la ciudad de barro de Chan Chan, capital del Imperio Chimú. Las aves marinas son muy importantes en la cosmovisión de las culturas precolombinas, ya que al habitar el litoral y las islas guaneras cercanas a la costa, son animales que comunican la tierra con el mar. Estos animales intermediarios son símbolos del tránsito entre ambos mundos. (UH)
