Certifies that Smith served in the army for three years in the 7th Massachusetts and was manumitted after his service. Knox writes, ”any person attempting to circumvent or trepan him as a slave will incur the severest penalty of the Law and the indignation of Heaven.” Smith likely turned to Knox under the threat of being reclaimed as a slave.
