Minnie Mouse made her film debut in 1928 in the world’s first synchronized-sound cartoon, “Steamboat Willie.” People have since speculated about the relationship between Mickey and Minnie. In a 1930 issue of “Film Pictorial,” Walt Disney noted that “in private life, Mickey is married to Minnie.” She has always been his leading lady in films, too. Minnie has also starred in her own shorts devoid of Mickey’s presence, and she has asserted her independence is such shorts as “Mickey’s Rival.” While Walt Disney originally provided the voice of Minnie, the role was soon handed over to ink and paint artist Marcellite Garner. Like Mickey, Minnie is often featured on licensed products.
