Though public charging garages and battery swaps were more common, home charging was available with early electric vehicles. Machines called mercury arc rectifiers, like the one pictured in the this instructional pamphlet from General Electric, converted alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and would charge a vehicle's batteries over several hours.
