About the artist: John Groth (1908 – 1988)
John Groth studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Royal Academy School of London, and the Art Students League, New York. In 1944, Groth became a war artist and correspondent for the Chicago Sun. He covered World War II; the Korean War; and events in French Indochina, the Congo, and the Dominican Republic. In 1966, at the age of 58, Groth was persuaded to go to Vietnam to document the war, becoming the first civilian combat artist selected for the Marine Corps Combat Art Program. He worked as a freelance artist and taught classes at the Art Students League, the Pratt Institute, and Parsons School of Design, among others. Groth died in 1988.
