Madrid, Spain

This engraving shows the moment Juan Sebastián Elcano was welcomed back from his voyage by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, in Valladolid. In this meeting, after telling the monarch about the voyage, Elcano received an annual salary of 500 gold ducats (four times his salary at the time), and a coat of arms with a globe featuring the inscription: Primus circumdedisti me (You were first to circumnavigate me).

It is part of the book History of the Royal Spanish Navy written by José Ferrer de Couto and José March y Labores between 1849 and 1854. This work is illustrated with engravings by various artists, including one by Carlos Mugica, a painter and illustrator who worked for publications like the Spanish Artistic Journal (Semanario Pintoresco Español), among others.
