This is a regal decree ordering the people to drive out Roman Catholicism, which was viewed as an evil doctrine. Edicts of this kind were proclaimed on four occasions by the king, i.e. by King Sunjo in 1801, by King Heonjong in 1839, and by King Gojong in 1866 and 1881. The edicts of 1839 and 1881 were issued in Hangeul (Korean alphabet) as well as in classical Chinese to ensure widespread understanding. The copy kept at the Silhak Museum is one of those that King Gojong presented to his closest officials in 1881.
