Cheongsam Vest with Broad Three-quarter Sleeves

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This item, seen as one of the landmarks in the development of cheongsams, is composed of two kinds of textiles, namely, black lace with floral pattern for the long vest and light-colored satin with blue blocks for the broad three-quarter sleeves. When sewn together, the above-mentioned two sections make a one-piece gown with a well-trimmed silhouette, a high standing collar and two side slits. As the rudiment of the combination between long vests and padded jacket with broad sleeves, this piece of cheongsam harbingered the emergence of modern cheongsams.
