Chest-of-drawers

1868–1912

This gold lacquer chest bears motifs that are familiar to earlier painting traditions. The landscape scenes on the outside have rivers and plum trees that appear to come from paintings by the great Rimpa artist Ogata Korin (1658-1716). When the two doors are opened, the scene that sweeps across from left to right is the willow bridge that spans the Uji River near Kyoto.
