The advertising industry had its origins in the 1920s. For many years, advertising photographs in local magazines and newspapers consisted simply of images of products that wereclear-cut from their surroundings. This photograph is a rare and early example of the more sophisticated approach with which we are familiar today. The advertised car is barely shown, for an image of the object itself is not aspersuasive as admiring its shiny newness through the eyes of a well-groomed, happy looking couple. The message is clear - if we buy the car we can be like this desirable, ideal pair ourselves.
