Of fine sheer silk with geometric pattern in red, grey, and blue, the high-waisted dress has richly detailed smocking on the front and back bodice, which is repeated on the edges of the unusually-constructed sleeves and as trim on the two sack-shaped pockets. The batiste Peter Pan collar is edged in lace and enhanced with a braided dangle of the silk fabric, and there is a matching wide sash. The dress was worn by Shirley Temple during her auto trip across America in 1938, with a visit to Washington D.C. Worn and photographed on her visit to the FBI headquarters with J. Edgar Hoover on June 28,1938. [description from Theriault's "Love, Shirley Temple" auction catalogue]
