Child's sandals

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

This pair of child's sandals are symbolic in the way that they are made and are different from the sandals worn by the mother, either four days after marriage or until the pregnancy and birth. They are then hung from a strap on the madal, if the infant is a boy the ceremony of orlakabarakaca will take place. The sandals are made from cowhide by the husband(father).
