In 1773 the Upper Hall, an additional reception room, was referred to as the ‘Chinese Room’ because of its remodelling by Adam in the then fashionable chinoiserie style. The chimneypiece contains rare painted marble tiles and the carved decoration includes a cherub riding on a shell drawn by seahorses. A design by Adam for this chimneypiece survives in Sir John Soane’s Museum.
