An inanimate landscape, uniformly enveloped in light, provides the setting for the scene in the foreground, affording it great poetic intensity.
In a magnificent composition defined by a rigorous diagonal line, establishing a relationship between the figures, Christ directs his gaze, in an expression of accentuated mysticism, towards the angel holding the instruments of the Passion. The dramatic effects of the light once again make it possible to individualise the figures: while, in the distance, soldiers are making their way towards Christ and the subsequent moment of his arrest, the apostles are seen resting, enveloped in an intense light that seems to emerge from one of them.
In an attitude or prayer, looking at the angel appearing from heaven in order to soothe him, Christ occupies the centre of the representational space. In the foreground, on the edge of the figurative field, the apostles are depicted as being incautiously asleep. In the distance, in a landscape enveloped in the dawn twilight, is the group of soldiers making their way towards Christ.
