This percussion instrument consists of a box-shaped body with a hole on the top and a bat-shaped mallet. Announcing the start of a tune, this instrument was painted in green and placed at the east side of band line-up. Chuk is played by striking the hollow bottom of the box with a bat-shaped mallet. Introduced from Song dynasty of China in 1116, 11th year of King Yejong’s reign of Goryeo dynasty, it was used in various court and ritual music in Joseon period.
