The Church of St Andrew, a Minster Church, was built at the end of the 12th century. In the 15th century it was extended and the tower added.

On 7 April 1792, the abolitionist Olaudah Equiano married local woman Susanna Cullen here. Their children, Anna Maria Vassa and Johanna Vassa were later baptised in the church.
