Position and width of the fork are variable. The plunging time was only 20 ms. and the acceleration at the tip of the fork reached 90 g. The servo-controlled linear motor is shown detached from the machanism. The latter was all metal inside the vacuum and moving parts were hinged on crossed springs to avoid bearings.
