A “cicada” locust is perched on a buckeye tree. This bold, yet simple, composition is impressive. Seiju said, in “Sokoku” – a Japanese art magazine published in 1931, “Something like sense such as the coldness or the atmosphere of a frosty morning is hard to express in paintings. We can paint only form. Painting many forms creates feeling, sense, and atmosphere.” This painting puts these words into a visual perspective. This composition, which has no excess noise, makes its viewers eyes turn directly to the cicada. Moreover, the upward growing trunk of the tree, and the downward facing leaves, add a coolness effect to the picture.
