George Barret Jnr’s idealised landscapes were inspired by the 17th-century French painter Claude Lorrian, who was widely imitated in England by artists and garden designers alike. While Barret’s work might lack originality, it displays considerable skill in capturing the effects of warm, subtly diffused light. Frequently set in moonlight, sunset or sunrise, Barret’s watercolours combine classical architecture with human and natural elements, evoking a mood of distilled serenity
