Empire of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea

This ceremonial flag is painted with cloud designs and a phoenix on a blue triangular base. Other flags with a painted phoenix include Red Phoenix Flag and Blue Phoenix Flag. The phoenix is a mythical bird which appears during a reign of a wise king according to ancient stories . The front of the bird resembles a wild goose while the back resembles a mythical horse-like animal. Its appearance also resembles the neck of a serpent, a swallow’s chin, a chicken’s beak, and fish’s fin. The phoenix’s appearance varies by time and has sometimes been depicted in a form of real birds, such as pheasant, peacock, and rooster.
