The Lesney Co. in England first began producing toys after World War II. One of its most successful products was a replica of the horse-drawn coach that took Queen Elizabeth II of England to her coronation. The company's first version was, like this one, 15 3/4-inches long. When the company reduced the coach to a length of 4 1/2 inches the next year, the popular toy sold in the millions. From then on, Lesney produced thousands of miniature vehicle nearly small enough to fit into a matchbox, hence, the toys became known as Matchbox cars.
