Three-quarter length jacket made from brown wool fabric, with a turned-down collar and lapels. It fastens at the front with three buttons. The lapels and cuffs are decorated with velvet, as well as embroidery that imitates braids, buttonholes, and buttons that bear a certain resemblance to those used on military uniforms of the period.

This jacket has been attributed to the Redfern couture house, although it bears no label that allows this to be verified with any certainty. The Redfern house was founded in London by John Redfern in the mid-19th century, and garnered such prestige that further couture houses were opened in Paris and New York, and he even designed for Queen Victoria of England. His designs were characterized by comfort and functionality; the house was the first to create outfits specifically designed so that women could take part in sporting activities such as cycling, archery, and horse riding, while retaining the requirements of elegance and distinction imposed by the period.
